Study concludes that Shoppers who Read Labels, more likely to stay Thin reports HippoBlue.com.au
(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 16, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- A study reveals that shoppers who read labels are thinner than those who do not. The study shows that those who do not read labels, particularly women, weigh over nine pounds heavier than those who do.
The study, which was led by an international team, was based on more than 25,000 observations on health, eating, and shopping habits of US residents. The data was collected to see how often people read labels, and if so, how often.
The lead author, Maria Loureiro of the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, reflects on the study, First, we analyzed who read the nutritional label when purchasing foods, and then we move to the relationship with their weight.
These labels inform readers about what is in a product: sugar and protein, for instance, are listed along with calories.
The researchers state, Their lifestyle involves less healthy habits and, as a consequence, it could be the case that they are not so worried about the nutritional content of the food they eat, according to our results.
The study notes that smokers are less likely to read the nutritional labels. Those who live in cities were found to be more careful with reading food labels. In addition, those who read nutrition labels were also more likely to be people with high school and college education.
Men were less likely to read the labels at 58%, whereas 74%of women were likely to read them.
Loureiro states, In general, the associated impact is higher among women than men. On average, women who read the nutritional information have a body-mass index [a measurement of body fat based on weight and height] of 1.48 points lower, whereas this difference is just 0.12 points in men."
We know that this information can be used as a mechanism to prevent obesity. We have seen that those who read food labels are those who live in urban areas, those with high education, therefore, campaigns and public policy can be designed to promote the use of nutritional labeling on menus at restaurants and other public establishments for the benefit of those who usually eat

Canadian court eases HIV judgement by ruling no need to inform partners when using protection and low levels reports HIVDatingSite.co.uk
(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 16, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- HIV carriers, who have a low level of the virus, and use a condom do not have to tell their sexual partners that they have the disease, Canadas Supreme Court has ruled.
The court had ruled 14 years ago that HIV carriers have to tell their sex partners about the infection or they could be charged with aggravated sexual assault. The charge carries a maximum life sentence.
But Oct. 5 the high court decided 9-0 that HIV patients could decline to inform their partners of their infection if they use a condom and had a low load of the virus. The court said the decision was intended to reflect advances in medical treatment since the 1998 ruling.
A realistic possibility of transmission is negated by evidence that the accuseds viral load was low at the time of intercourse and that condom protection was used, wrote Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, the Canadian Press reported. McLachlin added that the law in the future might be adapted because of advances in treatment and the development of new risk factors.
HIV/AIDS activists had said the 1998 decision was confusing and was not applied consistently. They see the recent ruling as a partial victory.
Some advocates, however, said the ruling would continue to stigmatize HIV/AIDS patients.
They dont need the constant threat of criminal accusations and possible imprisonment hanging over their heads, the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network wrote in a statement. People without the infection have a false sense of security because they believe the law will protect them, the group said.
The Supreme Courts ruling was in response to two cases. One involved Clato Mabior of Winnipeg, who was accused of having sex with nine women from February 2004 to December 2005 but not revealing to them that he was HIV positive. Three of Mabiors convictions were upheld but one was rejected.
In February, Mabior was deported to South Sudan.
The other case involved a Quebec woman whose conviction was thrown out. She had been found guilty of aggravated assault and sexual assault in connection with having sex with a man without disclosing that she was HIV-positive.
